The Chief Scout would like to thank everyone who generously contributed to the Windsor Appeal. 'I am thrilled with the outcome of the Appeal and hugely grateful to you all.' The Appeal raised a total of £69,000.00 for St George.s Chapel. The permanent and public expression of gratitude from Queen/King.s Scouts and Award holders will take the form of complete refurbishment of the Rutland Chantry, which is a much used Chapel in St George's. Discussions are currently taking place between the Dean and Chapter of St George's Chapel regarding a suitable occasion to present the Book of Honour. Further details about this special event will be added as soon as it is arranged. | ![]() |
St George's Chapel, Windsor is one of the most beautiful buildings in England with 500 years of Royal history. As well as being a favourite place of Worship for the Royal Family, it is the home of the College of St George and also the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter whose Patron Saint is St George. St George is the Patron Saint of Scouts and Her Majesty The Queen is the Patron of The Scout Association. The Chapel is a special place in Scouting's history.
Since 1934, by personal permission of the Sovereign, tens of thousands of King's Scouts and Queen's Scouts have paraded in the Castle grounds and then moved to the peace and tranquillity of the Chapel for a service of celebration and thanksgiving. The service traditionally culminates in the renewal of the Scout Promise led by the Chief Scout. The current Chief Scout, George Purdy, has a message below for all King's Scouts, Queen's Scouts and Good Service Award Holders. Some will have their own very personal memories of the Castle and the Chapel. All have demonstrated the commitment and service to others that led the Founder to look to St George to epitomise the qualities of selflessness and moral and physical courage he saw as being among the aims of Scouting.

Dear King and Queen's Scouts, Throughout the world there are people like you who have enjoyed your Scouting and gained the Movement's highest award for personal achievement. In 2004 it will be seventy years since King George V granted King's Scouts the honour of parading in Windsor Castle and holding a National Scout Service in St George's Chapel. For many young people it was probably their first opportunity to meet a member of the Royal Family. It will have been a unique moment in their lives. Each year as I look around the Chapel with its glorious architecture and the spectacular banners marking the achievements of the Knights of the Garter, I think, what a very special place it is. Each year we depart the Chapel and go forward but what do we leave behind us? We have been enriched by what the Chapel has offered us. Perhaps this is a good time to ask what can we offer the Chapel? The Dean has agreed that the Chapel would appreciate some form of permanent and public expression of gratitude from King's Scouts, Queen's Scouts and the holders of Awards for Good Service to mark our special relationship. Our Patron has welcomed this offer.
Do please think about joining me in making a contribution. With all my best wishes George Purdy CBE |
